A Homelab is a safe space to learn, test theories that you are considering implementing at work or study for certifications. Homelabbing is a whole other discussion really but there is a great subreddit at r/homelab which will make whatever you have feel puny. Yes, a GUI is nice but if you take some time to learn how the system is put together underneath you'll put yourself in a really great position to talk with passion about this subject at your next job interview.
